In my recent overview of the iWork ‘09, I mentioned the new Freeze Header feature in Numbers. This feature is basically the same as the Freeze Pane function in Microsoft Excel. It lets you set one or more rows or columns to always stay visible, even when scrolling around a large spreadsheet.
Since I’ve been seeing some people searching the Web for information on how to use this new feature, I thought I’d post this quick tip here.
Excel Mac Freeze Panes Not Working
To freeze multiple rows (starting with row 1), select the row below the last row you want frozen and click Freeze Panes. To freeze multiple columns, select the column to the right of the last column you want frozen and click Freeze Panes. Say you want to freeze the top four rows and leftmost three columns. You'd select cell D5, and then on the. When you freeze panes, the rows above and columns to the left of the active cell are immobilized. In order to change the freeze point, you must unfreeze and freeze the cells again. Select a cell next to the row and/or column you want to freeze. If you select a cell in the first column, only the rows above it will freeze (no columns). Excel will Freeze Panes in an unpredictable way in which you did not intend. Note the lines indicating that rows and columns above and to the left of I12 are frozen. This is by far nothing close to what we intended. So, be sure that all rows above your freeze point are in view before selecting Freeze Panes.
The Freeze Pane function in Numbers ‘09 works a bit different than in Excel. In Numbers, you can only freeze header rows and columns. These headers are special in that Numbers knows that they’re not part of the actual data in a table, but rather sort of a “label” for the respective rows and columns.

The second section from above is labeled Headers & Footer. Here you can select how many header rows or columns you want your table to have. And at the bottom of those menus, you can select if you want the headers to be frozen.
